Store-bought cleaning solutions for carpet cleaners can be quite expensive and typically don't have a pleasant scent. It's really easy to make your own carpet cleaners at home that will leave your space smelling like fresh, clean laundry! This DIY carpet cleaner cuts through dirt, neutralizes odors, and even has stain-fighting properties.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide — 3% solution

  • 1 Tbsp. of dish liquid

  • 1 Tbsp. of OxiClean Max Force (or similar) stain remover

  • 1/2 cup of fabric softener

  • 1-gallon container

  • Water

1. Combine the cleaning ingredients

Add the following ingredients to a gallon-size container:

  • 1 cup hydrogen peroxide (3%)
  • 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap
  • 1 tablespoon OxiClean Laundry Stain Remover
  • 1/2 cup fabric softener

Tip

You can save money by purchasing refill bottles of stain remover, rather than spray bottles.

Warning

Always use 3% hydrogen peroxide for cleaning solutions. Stronger 6% solution is more likely to bleach out color from carpets and other dyed materials. Test this homemade cleaner on a small, inconspicuous area of your carpet to make sure it does not affect the color.

2. Mix with water

Fill the rest of the container with water and mix well.

3. Store safely until use

Store the cleaning solution in a safe place away from the reach of children until ready to use.

How to Use the Carpet Cleaner

To use, fill the carpet cleaner's reservoir with water. Make sure to follow the directions of your carpet cleaner's manufacturer's instructions.

Pour the suggested amount of cleaning solution into the reservoir and clean your carpets according the the manufacturer's instructions.
