Terracotta (clay, or baked earth) flower pots are used for infinitely more than planting flowers. Crafters use the handy pots for everything from Christmas tree decorations to kitchen utensil holders. Whether used for planting or crafts, the pots come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Pots may be sized by their diameter, height or volume. The size you need will depend on your planned use.

Video of the Day
Transfer your summer flower or vegetable favorites into 4-inch-diameter terracotta pots after they have taken root. Terracotta is porous and will keep them from drowning if over-watering occurs. Upgrade to a larger 8- to 10-inch pot as the plant grows.

Decorating an Indoor Space
Add a warm and earthy feel to any room by placing flowers and other greenery in standard terracotta flower pots. These pots range from 1-1/2-half inches high to 18-inches high and are wider at the top than at the bottom. The smallest sizes are impractical for plants but may be painted and used as catch-alls for tiny items in your house.
Decorating a Windy Outdoor Space
Any size terracotta pot may be used to decorate the patio and garden area. Consider using larger, wide-bottomed pots in places prone to high winds. These types of pots are available in sizes ranging from about 4 to 24 inches in height with widths about 1 to 3 inches larger. Box-shaped pots of varying heights, widths and lengths may also be appropriate for these areas.
Decorating a Sheltered Outdoor Space
If wind is not a consideration, taller sizes are available with smaller bases. This gives a vase-like appearance. Some of these terracotta pots can be 25-inches tall.
Getting Crafty
Any size clay pot can be used in making crafts. String teeny ones together to make a necklace or use a tall one in your house to hold umbrellas. These pots come in all shapes and sizes and can be used for almost occasion. Many distributors also sell pots decorated on the outside.
