Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape

  • Grease gun

Links, rollers, segments, seals, idlers and pins are just a few of the parts that make up the undercarriage system of the Caterpillar vehicles found around construction sites all over the world. Because of the number of moving parts that make up the undercarriage system, adjustments to the actual tracks may be necessary occasionally. Fortunately, guidance is available from Caterpillar on how to adjust the tracks on a variety of Caterpillar tractors.

Step 1

Allow the tractor to move forward and come to a stop without applying the brake. Park the machine and turn off the tractor so that there is slack between the tractor's sprocket and front idler.

Step 2

Consult the documentation provided with the tractor to determine if the tractor is equipped with carrier rollers. If the tractor does not have carrier rollers, measure the distance to the tractor's grouser tip. If the track has carrier rollers, measure the distance to the tractor's grouser tip both in front of the idler and carrier roller "A" as well as in front of sprocket "B". Average the two figures.

Step 3

Consult the Proper Track Sag chart to determine if the figures obtained by measuring the grouser tip indicate a need for adjustment. The chart provides details for a number of caterpillar models.

Step 4

Locate the hydraulic fill and relief valve on the rear of the tractor. Remove the inspection cover and add grease using a manual grease gun. Close the valve after adding the grease.

Step 5

Allow the tractor to move forward and then in reverse. Park the tractor and remeasure the tractor's grouser tips to ensure that the track is correctly adjusted. Add more grease to the hydraulic fill and relief valve if the track is still not tight enough.
