Make a medieval helmet using household materials.

When you are dressing up as a medieval knight for Halloween, for a class play or for a costume party, you can have a hard time locating a knight's helmet from a costume shop. One solution is to make a medieval helmet using a few basic materials that can be found around the house. For example, alter a plastic water jug to transform it into a realistic-looking medieval helmet that you can wear with a set of chain mail or knight's armor.

Step 1

Place a plastic water jug upright on a table top. Using scissors, cut off and discard the top third of the jug, including the spout and tapered area of the jug.

Step 2

Place the water jug horizontally on the table with the handle side facing up. Cut away one third of the side of the water jug, effectively cutting away the handle. This is the area you will use to see out of the medieval helmet.

Step 3

Place the water jug upside down onto the table with the bottom of the jug facing up. This will be the top of the helmet. Place three to four ostrich feathers on top of the helmet and tape them into place with masking tape.

Step 4

Combine 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt and 2 cups of water in a bowl. Stir the mixture for two minutes to combine the ingredients completely.

Step 5

Cut 30 to 40 cotton gauze into strips with scissors to measure 2-inches wide and 6-inches each. Dip each gauze strip into the flour mixture and drape one at a time over the plastic helmet. Cover the outside and inside of the helmet with three layers of coated gauze. Allow to dry for 12 hours.

Step 6

Paint the medieval helmet with silver latex paint, then allow the paint to dry for 30 minutes. This will make the helmet look as if it is constructed from metal.

Warning

Keep sharp scissors out of the reach of children.
