Make a fake torch using basic craft materials.

When you are organizing a theatrical performance set during the Middle Ages, make a castle scene more realistic by placing torches on the castle. Although real torches are too dangerous to use in a theatrical performance, you can make a safe alternative by creating fake torches using a few basic craft supplies. This enables you to create authentic-looking castle torches for the play, without causing the house to burn down to the ground.

Step 1

Cut down the length of a paper towel tube, and twist the tube into a cone. Tape along the seam of the cone, using masking tape to secure it in place.

Step 2

Place a bowl on a table top, and pour 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of salt and 1 cup of water into the bowl. Stir the mixture with a spoon for 1 minute to combine the ingredients completely.

Step 3

Cut newspaper into strips that each measure 2-inches wide, 4-inches long. Dip each strip into the flour mixture, and drape them over the paper cone. Cover the cone with three layers of paper mache strips, then allow the cone to dry for four hours.

Step 4

Paint the cone using brown acrylic paint, then allow the paint to dry for 30 minutes.

Step 5

Paint a thin layer of clear acrylic glaze over the painted cone, then allow the glaze to dry for 30 minutes.

Step 6

Apply a thin layer of tacky glue into the inside of the cone, then insert three pieces of colored tissue paper into the cone. Use one orange, one yellow and one red piece of tissue paper. Fluff out the tissue paper to make it look more like a flame. Allow the glue to dry for 30 minutes.

Step 7

Spray the tissue paper with a light layer of spray adhesive, and sprinkle microglitter over the tissue paper. Allow the adhesive to dry for 5 minutes, then shake off the excess microglitter.

Step 8

Repeat to create as many fake castle torches as you need for your theatrical performance.

Warning

Keep sharp scissors out of the reach of children.
