Things You'll Need

  • Square piece of orange paper

  • Crayons or markers

People of all ages can enjoy origami.

First-generation Pokemon Charmander is a salamander/dinosaur mix with reddish-orange skin, a pale yellow belly, and a few small but sharp teeth. He evolves into Charmeleon and then Charizard, upon reaching certain levels. Use the Japanese art of paper folding to create an origami version of this cute character. This design is simple to follow, so it's perfect for kids and beginner origami enthusiasts.

Step 1

Fold the square in half vertically then unfold it. This makes a crease down the middle of the paper.

Step 2

Fold the left side so it touches the crease line. Fold the right side so it overlaps the left side, but do not fold it all the way to the left edge. Cover 3/4 of the left side with the right, and leave 1/4 showing. The result is a rectangle.

Step 3

Fold down the top edge. Fold about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch of the paper. You only want a small strip of paper folded down.

Step 4

Fold down the top right and top left corners. The corners will not touch.

Step 5

Fold the tip of the right corner you just folded up so that it sticks out from the top. This makes a pleat, and the fold will pop up a little. Repeat this step with the left tip.

Step 6

Fold the top edge of the rectangle down so that it meets the bottom edge. Two little triangles will stick out from the bottom. Those are Charmander's teeth.

Step 7

Fold back all four corners. Fold back only the back layer of paper with the bottom corners. The top layer is Charmander's teeth. Fold the corners back far enough so that only the teeth stick out.

Step 8

Draw Charmander's big, expressive eyes and his nostrils on the front to complete his face.

Tip

If you have more-advanced origami skills, fold the corners inside. Use inside reverse folds to sink the corners. Fold the corner to the front and then back. Press down on the corner and it will fall inside along the creases. This will hide the corners so that Charmander will look complete from both the front and the back.

Use white paper then color everything but the teeth orange, using crayons or markers, to make Charmander's teeth really stand out.
