Things You'll Need

  • Desk lamp

  • Drill

  • Standard drill bit

  • Butterfly drill bit

  • Vice

  • Spoon

The coconut's hard shell makes it ideal for craft projects.

Lampshades are commonly used on ceiling lights and desk lamps to shade the rays from a light bulb. This protects people's eyes from bright light and helps to illuminate areas of the room. Fabric, metal and plastics are commonly used for lampshades, but natural materials, like coconut shells, can also be used. A coconut lampshade can add a tropical feel to any room when the lights are turned on.

Step 1

Secure the coconut upright in a vice and drill a small hole in the top. Turn the coconut upside down and drain out all the liquid inside.

Step 2

Deconstruct the lampshade of a standard desk lamp and measure the diameter of the treaded part of the lamp. This is the size of hole that will need to be cut in the bottom of the coconut shell. Lamps can be taken apart by removing the light bulb and unscrewing the plastic conical retainer.

Step 3

Attach a butterfly drill bit to the drill that is the diameter of the measurement taken in the last step. Secure the coconut upside down in the vice and drill through the bottom of the shell.

Step 4

Turn the coconut the correct way up in the vice and drill another hole in the top. The diameter of this hole is purely a personal choice, but it needs to be large enough to fit a light bulb through.

Step 5

Leave the coconut to dry outside for a couple of days so no liquid gets into the electrics of the lamp. Scrape out any coconut flesh from the inside using a spoon and rinse out with water.

Step 6

Place the bottom end of the coconut over the threaded section of the desk lamp and screw on the plastic conical retainer. Insert the light bulb and turn on the lamp.

Tip

Drill holes around the coconut so the shell gives out extra light.
