Oven vents need regular cleaning.

Steam and greasy smoke are released into the air when you cook on a range. The smoke and steam can cause damage to paint and the kitchen ceiling. Most ranges have a vent installed over them to prevent this. The vent draws smoke and steam out of the air. Over time, the vent will collect so much smoke and grease that it will begin to smell. A thorough cleaning will remove the foul smell from the vent.

Step 1

Remove the screws from the vent filter screen, if applicable. Some filters may be clipped to the vent without screws. Pull the vent screen off the range hood.

Step 3

Fill the sink with hot water, and add a teaspoon of liquid dish detergent.

Step 4

Submerge the filter in water. Scrub the filter to remove all the grease and smoke.

Step 5

Rinse the filter with hot water. If any smell remains, repeat the entire process.

Step 6

Turn off the electricity to the vent hood. Spray the inside of the hood with a degreaser, and scrub it with a sponge or rag.

Tip

Inspect the inside of the vent hood for grease buildup. If necessary, call a professional vent cleaner to have the grease removed.
