Things You'll Need

  • Helper

  • Step ladder

  • Phillips-head screwdriver

  • Socket wrench

Sometimes, there are simply no more adjustments you can do to make an old hydraulic door closer work effectively. This means you will have to remove the closer and install a new one. It is necessary to close the door to safely remove a hydraulic exterior door closer. This is because when the door is open, the hydraulic mechanism engages, preparing to slow the door down while opening and closing the door. Once the door closes, the pressure is relieved inside the closer body. Most major brands of door closers are generally installed and removed in the same manner.

Step 1

Ask a friend to stand on the outside of the door while you are removing the hydraulic door closer. This helps prevent people from opening the door while you are working. If you do not have a helper, close the door and engage the door lock to prevent people from opening the door from the other side.

Step 2

Set up a step ladder under the door closer. Pull the cover off the closer if necessary to access the four mounting screws. There is a mounting screw at each corner.

Step 3

Remove the screw and washer securing the lower half of the door arm to the top of the closer with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the lower arm off the top of the closer. Remove the pin securing the upper door arm to the bracket on the door frame. Remove the arm completely from the bracket.
