Step 1

Cut both pieces of cardboard into rounded onion shapes by curving the corners.

Step 2

Stuff both pillowcases with fiberfill, keeping the stuffing out of the corners. If you want to sew, stitch the opening closed. If not, use the hot glue gun to close the opening.

Step 3

Dilute the brown acrylic paint with water and paint one side of the pillowcases. Use strokes from top to bottom to create an onion look. Do not be concerned about streaks or uneven coverage; that adds to the realism. Allow the pillowcases to dry.

Step 4

Attach shoulder and side straps to the cardboard pieces while pillowcases are drying, using the lengths of ribbons and the hot glue. Put the straps far enough apart to allow the two pieces of cardboard to fit over your head and hang from the ribbons at the shoulders. Adjust the length of the ribbons to fit your height. Allow the glue set.

Step 5

Attach one onion "pillow" to the front cardboard piece, with lots of hot glue. Fold the corners and sides of the pillowcase over and glue them down on the back side of the cardboard to create a rounded onion. Then glue the other onion pillow to the piece of cardboard on the opposite side. You will now have an onion formed by two large cardboard pieces covered with onion pillows and hanging from shoulder straps.

Step 6

Glue raffia accents in place. Fold the brown raffia in half and glue to the center bottom of the onion pillow that will be in the front of your costume. Glue the green raffia to the center top of the stretch knit beanie cap.

Tip

Wear green pants or tights along with a green long-sleeve shirt under the costume.

Warning

Use care when operating a hot glue gun.
