The Pottery Barn Holman shelf system has a floating design with no visible brackets or screws. The shelf is available in 2-, 3- and 4-foot lengths and homeowners can install them in a staggered fashion together for more intricate room designs. Installing the shelf involves mounting the provided bracket on the wall and then slipping the holes on the rear of the shelf over the bracket to lock the shelf on for support.

Step 1

Hold the Holman shelf up to the wall and move it around to determine the desired placement in the location you have chosen. Draw a line across the top rear edge of the shelf using a pencil and then set the shelf aside.

Step 2

Place a stud finder tool up to the wall and turn it on. Slide the stud finder sideways along the pencil line until you see it flash or beep, indicating a wall stud location. Draw an "x" on the area and proceed to locate all remaining stud locations along the pencil line.

Step 3

Pick up the mounting bracket bar provided with the shelf. Look at the front for a narrow channel that runs the length of it and insert the provided bubble level into the channel until it is in the center.

Step 4

Place the bracket up to the wall with the level on the bottom and slide it along the pencil line until one or more of the holes align with stud marks on the wall. Tilt the bracket until the air bubble in the level is in the exact center.

Step 5

Darken the wall stud marks in the holes that align with the screw holes on the bracket and create a mark in the next to last hole on both ends of the bracket, creating two marks that are not on studs. Set the bracket aside.

Step 6

Locate the two outermost wall marks and insert a toggle bolt in each. Tighten the bolts using a power drill until the heads are flush with the surface of the wall.

Step 7

Hold the bracket back up to the wall and align the holes with the two toggle bolts. Insert a toggle screw through the center of each hole and tighten the screws with the screwdriver until they fit tightly against the bracket.

Step 8

Insert a stud screw through each remaining hole that falls over a wall stud using the power drill.

Step 9

Pick up the Holman shelf and turn the rear bracket toward the wall. Place it 1 inch above the installed wall bracket and lower it so the two brackets lock together.
