Installing vinyl siding over concrete is similar to installing it over wood, since you have to install wooden furring strips under the siding. Vinyl siding can give an ordinary concrete home an appealing, polished look and update its appearance. Although the process of installing vinyl siding is relatively simple, it helps to have assistance. Check with your local building department to determine whether any permits are needed for the project.

Step 1

Nail 1 1/2-inch-thick wooden furring strips to the concrete wall at 4-foot intervals using concrete nails. The number of strips you need depends on the length of the wall.

Step 2

Install a strip of insect netting along the bottom edge of the concrete wall by nailing the netting to the furring strips. The netting should reach about 1 foot up the wall and overlap the ground slightly to form a barrier between the ground and the concrete. This will prevent insects from nesting between the siding and the concrete.

Step 3

Position the first piece of vinyl siding against the furring strips at the top of the wall. Nail the siding strip into place with small nails, leaving 1/8 inch of the nail shank showing. This will allow the vinyl to contract and expand with changes in the weather.

Step 4

Slide the next piece of siding into place, locking the two pieces together with the built-in locking mechanism. Make sure the nail holes in the two strips of siding are aligned so you can nail the second piece of siding into place.

Step 5

Continue working in this manner until all the strips of vinyl siding are in place. Slide the vertical trim pieces in place at the edges of the vinyl siding to complete the project.
