You can use whatever you have on hand, but some of the recommended ingredients are cinnamon, citrus, and of course a few simple clippings of pine or fir. The sense of smell is perhaps one of our most powerful as it triggers memories and these ingredients certainly remind a lot of us of the holiday season.

Things You'll Need

  • Jar

  • Cranberries

  • Cinnamon sticks

  • Cloves

  • Nutmeg

  • Orange or any citrus peel

  • Pine, fir or any fragrant evergreen clipping

  • Tag

Step 1

Gather desired ingredients and scents.

For the first scent, we used common seasonal ingredients like cranberries, cinnamon, clove and pine.

For scent number two, we used orange peel combined with cloves, nutmeg, whole peppercorns and fresh pine.

Step 3

Place all of your ingredients in the jar, leaving the pine for last as it's placement on the top is more aesthetically appealing.

Step 4

Close the jar tightly and attach a tag.

The recipient of your gift jar can prepare stovetop potpourri by simply placing the ingredients in a small saucepan along with two cups of water and bringing it to a simmer.
