Things You'll Need

  • Roost No More, typically sold in a caulk container (This is a particular brand but you can purchase similar brands that offer the same repellent)

  • Standard caulk gun

  • Dust face mask or respirator

  • Rubber gloves

  • Cleaning material with ammonia for the ledge area

  • Water mist sprayer

  • Paint scraper

  • Plastic garbage bags

  • Damp rags

When pigeons or other birds are landing on your ledges or roof line, leaving droppings everywhere, it can be a real nuisance. Roost No More material is a quick and effective way to keep them from roosting. The product gives them a "hot foot" sensation without harming them and simply drives them away. The birds remember this sensation, even once the product has dissipated, so they still will not come back to the same spot in many cases.

Step 1

Take note of the specific areas where the birds are roosting on a regular basis so you will know exactly where to concentrate treatments.

Step 2

Typical painters paper face mask.

Clean the ledge or roosting areas. Wear rubber gloves and a face mask and spray the ledge with water or a cleaning solvent. You want any droppings to remain wet and not become airborne, which could be harmful if ingested. Scrape the ledge clean into your plastic garbage bags, tie off the bag and dispose of properly into outside trash receptacle.

Step 3

Common application pattern for bird repellent

Put on your rubber gloves and have wet rags handy and then apply the repellent in a zigzag pattern. Then run a line or two through the zigzags (see picture). The idea is that wherever they land, they will pick up the product on their feet. Cover as much nearby area as well so you are not just moving them around from one spot to another.

Step 4

When a bird first lands on the product, they will not necessarily immediate fly away, but will in time once the product begins to give them a hot or burning sensation. Also, keep in mind that the product will not last forever on the ledge and will deteriorate in time due to sunlight and other weather conditions.

Step 5

Retreat as needed. Usually, this means every 2 weeks or monthly until the birds have completely left the area. You may also consider keeping active product out on a regular basis for preventative measures.

Tip

Tape off the tip of your caulk applicator after each use to help prevent the product from drying up in the tube. Keep some wet rags around for cleanup during application. The product is very sticky.

Warning

Always keep bird droppings wet down when cleaning them, wearing face mask and rubber gloves at all times.
