A DIY grape costume made from balloons is fun and amusing and is suitable for all ages. It's also one of the easiest and most inexpensive DIY Halloween costumes to make even at the last minute and especially if you have a friend or family member to help you.

Using purple balloons as grapes gives the homemade costume an extra element of fun, and you don't need to worry too much about the balloons popping. Just bring a few extras and you can repair your grape Halloween costume in a matter of minutes. Add the balloons to just the front of the costume for an easier-to-wear option, especially for kids' Halloween costumes, or all around the body for an extra-fun, 360-degree version of the grape balloon costume.

Things You'll Need

  • Bag of 50 12- to 15-inch-diameter purple balloons

  • 24-square-inch piece of green felt

  • Marker

  • Scissors

  • At least 25 small safety pins or a sewing needle and thread

  • Purple knit cap

  • Purple or black tights or leggings

  • Purple or black tight-fitting T-shirt, tunic or short dress

Inflate purple balloons

Blow up the purple balloons and knot them tightly at the ends. To avoid them popping, make sure to only inflate the balloons up to about two-thirds of their capacity. Inflate at least 20 balloons at first and plan to inflate more as you need them. Remember to put at least a few balloons aside as spares.

Green balloons will also work if you prefer green over purple grapes for your fruit costume.

Make the grape leaves

Cut two grape leaf shapes out of felt to attach to your shoulders. Look at images of grape leaves and copy their shape on the green felt with a marker. Make the leaves slightly larger than the size of the costume wearer's hands.

Cut a third grape leaf shape that is smaller than the first two out of the remaining felt. Attach this smaller leaf to the top of the purple knit cap or headband with a safety pin or a few stitches using a needle and thread.

Assemble the bunch of grapes

Attach the balloons one at a time to a T-shirt, tunic or short dress using safety pins or a few stitches with a needle and thread.

Make sure you only pierce the balloons in the sections underneath the knots. Arrange more balloons toward the top of the garment than the bottom to resemble a bunch of grapes hanging from a stem. You can attach balloons just to the front or all around the garment depending on your preference.

A grape balloon costume is effective whether you use a T-shirt, tunic or dress as the base layer for the balloons.

You should arrange the balloons all the way from the neckline to the hemline, which means that the longer the garment, the longer the bunch of grapes will be. You will need more balloons for a longer garment.

Wear leggings under the Halloween costume

Put on tights or leggings and then carefully put on the DIY grape costume. If necessary, have a friend or family member rearrange some of the balloons for better comfort or to make the grape balloon costume better resemble a bunch of grapes.

Grape costume final touches

Pin or sew one of the larger green-felt grape leaves to each shoulder and put on the hat to complete the grape Halloween costume.
