  • Blanket Binding

  • Sewing Machine

  • Sewing Notions (scissors, thread, pins, etc.)

  • Iron

  • Tape Measure

Instead of purchasing a boring ready-made comforter that may not be exactly the colors or patterns that you want, you could make your own comforter from exactly the kind of fabric and colors that will compliment your own unique bedroom decor.

In fact, if you make your own comforter you will likely end up with a much nicer and higher quality comforter than you would have if you bought one.

Anyone with even novice level sewing skills can make their own comforter easily in an afternoon or evening.

Step 1

Measure the bed that the comforter is for. Incorporate the length you plan to have the comforter extend down the sides of the bed into your measurements.

Step 2

Purchase the fabric for the top of the comforter and the backing of the comforter according to the measurements taken in Step 1. For a larger comforter, piece the comforter top and backing out of two pieces of fabric. Purchase the batting for the same dimensions. You could place one or two layers of batting in the comforter.

Step 3

Make the comforter top and backing. If necessary, sew smaller fabric pieces together to make the comforter top and the backing the same size as the measurements from Step 1.

Step 4

Spread the backing out with the wrong side up. Place the one or two layers of batting on top of the backing. Place the comforter top on the batting layers with the right side up.

Step 5

Secure the comforter edges with pins. Stitch around all four edges with a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Remove pins.

Step 6
