Make a Bandana Dress for a Toddler

Many years ago, bandanas were only made in red or navy. Those are still the most popular colors. However, today, they come in pink, yellow, green, turquoise, orange, black and many other colors. Creative people have designed different uses for these patterned squares of fabric. One simple, but cute item is the toddler's dress. With very basic sewing skills, anyone can put together a summer rainbow wardrobe for any little girl.

Step 1

Purchase your supplies. You will need two bandanas of the same color and 4 feet of 3/4-inch satin ribbon. You will also need straight pins, a large safety pin, scissors, thread and a sewing machine.

Step 2

Fold under the top of both bandanas 1 inch. Pin in place. Sew across on both pieces, close to the inside edge of the bandana. This will form a tube on each fabric piece.

Step 3

Measure the child from the top of her shoulder to her underarm. Add 2 inches to this measurement for moving room. Using this measurement, and with a straight pin, mark down from the top of the bandanas on both sides.

Step 4

Turn the two right sides of the bandanas to face each other. Pin them together at the sides, from the bottom to the marked pin spot. Sew both sides with a 1/2-inch seam.

Step 5

Cut the 4 feet of ribbon in half. Attach the large safety pin to one of the ribbon pieces. Work it through the front top fabric tube. When you reach the other side, pull the ribbon through so it is even on both sides. Repeat for the backside of the toddler dress. Tie a bow with the ribbon on each side of the dress.

Tip

When the child is ready to wear the dress, untie the ribbon. Let the child step into the dress and then retie the ribbon at the shoulders. Gather the top by pulling the ribbon tighter. Cut off any excess ribbon.
