Steamed fish is a nutritious and simple dish that can be made for lunch or dinner. Although there are a number of ways that you can prepare steamed fish, one of the easiest methods that requires the least effort is to make your steamed fish in a rice cooker. Following these steps will allow you to steam fish in your rice cooker with little difficulty, and if you are steaming rice at the same time, when you are done steaming the fish you will have a complete meal ready to be served.

Step 1

Prepare the spice mixture for your steamed fish. This can vary according to taste, and can include garlic, ginger, hot chili or any other flavors you wish to have on your fish. Bring out the flavor in your spices by cooking them on low for a minute or two in a little olive oil until they turn slightly brown.

Step 2

Measure out your rice and water according to the instructions of your rice cooker, and begin cooking rice in the usual way.

Step 3

Prepare your fish by chopping it into pieces that will fit in your rice cooker's steamer basket (or bowl, if you do not have a steamer basket). Also season the fish with the spice mixture you have prepared in the Step 1 by rubbing it atop the pieces of fish.

Step 4

Watch your rice cooker to see when the water in your rice starts cooking off. Once there is little visible water in the rice, place your seasoned fish into the steamer basket, and place the steamer basket on top of your rice cooker. (If you do not have a steamer basket, you can place the fish directly on top of the rice.)

Step 5

Leave the lid on the rice cooker, and allow the rice to finish boiling and then steam for the appropriate amount of time. (Generally, it is 10 to 15 minutes, but it may depend on your rice cooker.)

Tip

If you are not making rice, you can simply put 3 cups of water in the bottom of your rice cooker and steam the fish on top of that.

Warning

Check the fish before eating to make sure it is fully cooked, to avoid illness.
