A star costume is cute, fun, easy to make, and can be worn at a variety of events, from holiday pageants and parades, to dress-up parties, to trick-or-treating on Halloween. Whether for a child or an adult, a few handy supplies and a little imagination can lead to more creative results at a far cheaper cost than what you'll find in a costume store. And for parents, it can be an entertaining way to spend the afternoon with your kids.
Step 1
Measure the wearer of the costume with the yardstick from the neck to the knees. Record this measurement by marking it on the yardstick in pencil.

Step 2
Use the yardstick as a straight edge to draw a five-pointed star in the middle of one sheet of poster board. Each line of the star should match the measurement recorded on the yardstick.
Step 3
Cut out the star with scissors or a craft knife. Place this star on the second piece of poster board, trace around it and cut out the second star. Erase any pencil marks left on the poster board.
Step 4
Lay out old newspapers on the floor. Paint the chosen side of each star one color, then draw scrolling patterns with the glue and sprinkle it with glitter. Shake the excess glitter onto the newspaper. Allow the paint and glue to dry.
Step 5
Cut an oval the same size as the wearer's face near the bottom center of the top point of the front star. Hold the front star up to the wearer and make light pencil marks about 1/2 inch above and to the sides of the face and under the chin as guides. Cut the hole with the craft knife.
Step 6
Measure across the top of the wearer's shoulders. Cut two pieces of elastic string so each is 1/2 inch longer than the measurement.
Step 7
Cut small holes 1/2 inch below the top edges of the top right and left points on each star. Poke one piece of elastic string through the left hole on the front of the star and one through the right hole. Tie small knots at the ends so the elastic doesn't slip out of the holes. Slip each string through the corresponding holes on the back star and knot them as well.
Step 8
Do the same thing with the elastic string on the bottom two points of both stars, near the outside of the thighs.
Step 9
Paint the knots of the elastic string the same color as the rest of the star to camouflage them. Have the wearer put on the shirt and leggings. Then slide the star over the wearer's head so the elastic strings on the top left and right points sit on the shoulders. The wearer can look out of the hole in the top point.
Tip
Use sequins, strips of fabric or brightly colored markers to make a more unique-looking star.
Coat the poster board with glow-in-the-dark paint to create a star that shines at night.
Accessorize with items like a top hat, cane, sunglasses or roller skates.
Avoid wearing the costume in wet or rainy conditions.
Warning
If you are using spray paint, work outside or in a well-ventilated area and keep children and pets away from the fumes, as they can be toxic.
