One of the concerns when planting a new lawn from seed is protecting the seed from being washed away by rain. One heavy rainstorm can ruin all the time and money that you have invested in preparing the soil and planting the grass seed. Fortunately, there is a method that you can employ that will serve to keep your grass seed in place, and allow it to get the water and air that it needs to germinate successfully.

Step 1

Spray the newly seeded area with water gently so as not to wash the seed away, but thoroughly so as to soak the soil and seed. Use a garden hose with a nozzle that is set to mist, or adjust your sprinkler heads.

Step 2

Roll out the straw mats over the newly seeded area so that it is entirely covered.

Step 3

Secure the mats in place by driving landscaping stakes in along their edges using a sledgehammer.

Step 4

Continue to water the seed frequently throughout the germination period. The seed will be held in place and protected from damage or being washed away during a heavy rain storm. The mats allow for plenty of air and water to reach the seed.

Step 5

Look for the new grass to emerge, then remove the stakes and roll up the mats.
