Repairing a porcelain toilet could save you hundreds of dollars over replacement costs. Glazed porcelain toilets do not need sealant, unless a crack has undergone repair. You can use refinishing spray on exposed areas missing the glazed coating, followed by a surface repair coat. Even with the wondrous abilities of new-age epoxy, not every crack is repairable. Inspect the toilet carefully to ensure that the porcelain tank or bowl is not functionally compromised. Porcelain toilet sealing is an afternoon do-it-yourself project for most homeowners.

Step 1

Wipe the repaired area of porcelain down with acetone using cotton balls. This will remove any impurities and will allow the refinishing spray and sealant to adhere to the porcelain surface.

Step 2

Spray a quality surface repair refinishing coat over the epoxied crack. Allow the recommended drying time indicated on the label before continuing.

Step 3

Apply the clear surface repair spray over the refinish layer. These products are available at most home and garden centers.

Step 4

Allow 24 hours for the sealant to dry. Reassemble the toilet.
