Vertical Blinds

If your Hunter Douglas vertical blinds break, you can easily fix them using scissors and a screwdriver. You'll need to diagnose the problem before you get started on the solution.

Diagnose the Problem

Step 1

Open the blinds. If the blinds won't open, note where they stop. If there is something preventing them from opening, focus on that.

Step 2

Check each panel, also called the vanes. Notice if any vane is broken or detached from the headrail.

Step 3

Examine the tilt chain and the cord tension. The chain may be broken or have gotten off track.

Fix the Blinds

Step 1

Fix the vane clips. The clips that hold the vanes should be numbered and in numerical order, and the numbered side of the clip should face the room. There is a slot between the long and short prongs of the clip, and it should face you. The vanes should be snapped into place--make sure there aren't any loose vane clips.

Step 2

Check and fix the vanes. Make sure the vanes are clipped into the clips that correspond by number. Reattach any vane that is not secure in the clip.

Step 3

Fix the tension cord. If the tension cord was not installed properly or if it is broken, the pulley won't rotate and the cords won't be taut. Reset the cord tensioner. Make sure there is no excess cord. If there is, simply cut it. Note that the blinds must be in the closed position to do this properly.

Tip

Tie the cord into a knot so you can adjust it later. (Cutting the cord is permanent.)

These instructions focus on Hunter Douglas' Crosswinds wooden vertical blinds, though you should be able to adapt them for different blinds.

Warning

If the cords aren’t installed properly, they may become a hazard to young children.
