Decorative spoons can be displayed in an easy woodworking project

A common memento of a place or an event is the souvenir spoon. Many people amass large collections of these spoons and like to display them in their homes. A good do-it-yourself project is constructing a rack for these decorative spoons. A simple spoon rack can be made from an ordinary hanging wooden cutting board and a couple of pieces of wood for the spoon slots. The rack takes only one afternoon to make and is a good beginner woodworking project as well.

Step 1

Find the middle of each of the two pieces of wood. Each of these pieces will become a spoon holder on the rack. Mark the middle of each with the pencil on one of the 5/8-inch sides. Then make additional marks every 2 inches from the middle mark toward each end. Each of these pencil marks will be where you will cut out a spoon slot.

Step 2

Cut a rectangular notch at each mark ¾ inches deep. Make it 5/16 inches wide.

Step 3

Sand the pieces of wood and the cutting board smooth.

Step 4

Mark the positions of the spoon holders on the cutting board. The two spoon holder pieces should be far enough apart so that when you hang spoons on the rack they do not overlap. For example, if your largest spoon is 6 inches long, the spoon holders should be at least 7 inches apart. Also, the spoon holder pieces must be parallel on the cutting board.

Step 5

Clamp the spoon holder pieces onto the cutting board in their final position. Drill pilot holes through the back of the cutting board and into the spoon holders. Screw the spoon holder pieces to the cutting board, making sure to countersink the screw heads so that they do not protrude past the back surface of the cutting board. Sand smooth.

Step 6

Stain or paint the spoon holder any desired color, and let dry. Now your spoon rack is ready to display your spoons.

Tip

If you start with the type of cutting board that has a hole in the handle or some type of hanger, you do not have to build a hanger for the finished spoon rack.

Warning

Exercise caution when using power tools.

Use wood stain in a well-ventilated area.
