After completion, most outdoor woodworking projects require some type of sealant/preservative to protect them from damage and decay. To accomplish this, many homeowners select Cetol by Sikkens. Sikkens products are known for their quality and durability. Wood care products generally have specific application instructions designed to maximize their effectiveness, and Cetol is no exception to this. You will need some cooperation from the weather to achieve the best results.
Step 1
Smooth the surface to be treated with sandpaper. Use it to remove any splinters, raised grain or dirt. After sanding, use the stiff bristle brush to remove any dust. If mold is present, scrub it off with the wire brush.

Step 3
Clean your brush in mineral spirits. Allow the product to dry for a minimum of 24 hours.
Step 4
Spend another warm day with less than 80 percent humidity, to apply an initial coat of Cetol 23 Plus.
Step 5
Clean your brush with mineral spirits. Allow the first coat of Cetol 23 Plus to dry for a minimum of 24 hours.
Step 6
Apply a second cost of Cetol 23 Plus in weather conditions identical to those in described in Step 4.
Step 7
Clean your brush in mineral spirits.
Tip
Cetol 1 and Cetol 23 Plus are recommended for use on vertical uncoated surfaces such as fences or shed walls. For wooden furniture, Sikkens recommends three coats of Cetol 1 be applied. You will achieve better results if you can avoid applying Cetol in direct sun.
