Things You'll Need

  • FoodSaver

  • Seal-A-Meal bag

The FoodSaver allows users to store food in plastic bags for extended periods. The vacuum sealing process used by FoodSaver and Seal-A-Meal sealers is the same overall process. This allows the Seal-A-Meal bags to be used with a FoodSaver to store food. The length of time food will last varies based on the type of food and if the bag is also refrigerated or frozen. This length of time should not vary significantly based on the brand of bag used.

Step 1

Place the food to be stored into a Seal-A-Meal bag. There should be at least a 3-inch gap between the top of the bag and the top of the bag contents.

Step 2

Open the lid of the FoodSaver.

Step 3

Place the open top end of the bag on the sealing strip. This is the black line that is on the front edge of the FoodSaver.

Step 4

Close the lid of the FoodSaver, trapping the top of the Seal-A-Meal bag on the sealing strip. Turn the knob on the side of the FoodSaver to latch the lid shut.

Step 6

Wait for the light to turn off. Unlatch the lid and open it to remove the sealed bag. Refrigerate or freeze the bag if desired.

Tip

The storage time for the Seal-A-Meal bag will vary greatly based on the type of food and whether or not it is refrigerated or frozen. The food should be good for a minimum of 3 weeks, if left in the pantry. Frozen bags should last for at least a year.

Seal-A-Meal bags can be reused by washing with warm, soapy water after use. Bags used to store raw meat, raw fish, or any type of oily food should not be reused.

Warning

Bags should be under vacuum if sealed properly. If the bag does not create a small popping noise when opened, there is a chance the bag was punctured. Check the food thoroughly in those cases to make sure it was not contaminated.
