Melted crayons can simulate a stained glass window.

Crayons can be used in many ways besides coloring in a coloring book. Craft projects using crayons allow children to use their creativity and imagination. One such project is to melt the crayons and use them to create a stained glass window image. Not only will the children have fun, but it is also a great way to use up all of the crayon stubs that would otherwise be thrown into the trash.

Step 1

Stack two pieces of black construction paper together. Draw a rectangle in the center of the top piece with a pencil. This will be the cutout for the stained glass window. If desired, you can get creative and draw a window with rounded top edges.

Step 2

Keep both pieces of construction paper together and cut out the inner pencil line using a pair of scissors. You can also place the paper on a cutting mat and cut the line with a utility knife.

Step 3

Cut out two pieces of waxed paper that are each 8 1/2 inches wide by 11 inches long.

Step 4

Lay one piece of waxed paper on a towel with the waxed side facing upward.

Step 5

Remove all of the paper from the crayons and shave the crayon pieces using a cheese grater. You can also chop the pieces up using a knife but make sure the pieces are very small.

Step 6

Sprinkle the crayon shavings onto the waxed paper in the desired color pattern.

Step 7

Place another piece of waxed paper on top of the crayon shavings with the waxed side facing down.

Step 8

Plug in an iron and turn it to the lowest setting. Allow the iron to heat up and then press it lightly against the top piece of waxed paper. Hold the iron in place until you see the crayon start to melt and then move it over another section of waxed paper. Continue applying heat until all of the crayon shavings are melted.

Step 9

Allow the melted crayon to cool for approximately 60 seconds. Apply a thin layer of craft glue to one piece of construction paper. Insert the waxed paper and crayon layers onto the glue and press down gently. Apply glue to the other piece of construction paper and press the glued side down on top of the waxed paper.

Tip

You can also shave the crayons by using a crayon sharpener, but this will take much longer.
