Save money by cleaning your military hat instead of incessantly buying a new one.

Hats in the military are used to showcase rank and venerability. Several military branches incorporate white hats to their members. Many military personnel replace their headgear as soon as it is dirtied. However, this can become costly, as military hats can be expensive to replace. Like most clothing, a military hat can be cleaned with water and cleaning detergent.

Step 1

Remove any symbols or insignia from your military hat. These components are easily damaged and can even pop off while the hat is being washed. Set these items aside.

Step 2

Pre-treat any distinctive spots with a stain remover. Fantastik, Shout or any other stain remove will do. Pre-treating spots will help loosen up stubborn stains and grime.

Step 3

Fill your bathroom sink with a solution of cold water and laundry detergent. Pour in enough laundry detergent to create rich suds. You may add a scoop of OxyClean into the water to brighten light colors. Do not use dishwashing liquid, for this detergent can cause dyes to bleed and potentially discolor your hat. Soak the hat in this solution for about 15 minutes or until the hat seems clean. Rinse the hat in clean cold water until the water runs clear.

Step 4

Set the hat aside to air dry or use a fan to speed up the drying process. Replace any symbols and insignia.

Warning

Clean the hat when needed and not on a regular basis. The chemicals used in detergents can break down fibers overtime.

Use cold water to avoid shrinkage. Do not place the hat in a washing washing or dryer, or you risk the hat coming out deformed.
