Mold is a problem that nearly any homeowner has to deal with at some point. All mold requires to thrive is moisture and a lack of direct sunlight. This means mold can form anywhere inside or outside of the home. Surfaces that are fragile or prone to damage need to be cleaned extremely carefully to avoid harming them. Fortunately, an asphalt driveway is durable, and cleaning mold off of it is an uncomplicated task.

Step 1

Power wash the driveway if mold is covering a large area of it. You can rent a power washer from a hardware store if you don't have one. The combination of hot water and high pressure will eliminate most mold growth.

Step 2

Mix together 4 qts. of warm water, 1 qt. of chlorine bleach and 1/3 cup of powdered detergent in a mop bucket. Wear rubber gloves since the bleach is corrosive to the skin.

Step 3

Apply a small amount of the solution to a corner of the asphalt to test it. You want to make sure the bleach is diluted enough to not stain the driveway. If the corner changes color, use less bleach or switch to plain white vinegar, which is a natural cleaner and strong anti-mold agent.

Step 4

Mop the mold stains remaining on the driveway. Rinse the driveway off once you are done to remove any remaining bleach elements. The mold stains should be gone once the asphalt dries. Attack any mold remains with a scrub brush to spot clean as needed.
