How to End a Lanyard

Whether you were at camp during the summer or hanging out at home on a weekend afternoon, chances are that you or someone in your family enjoyed making lanyards, which is a fun hobby for people at any age. When creating lanyards, it's important to end them, whether they become zipper pulls or boondoggles. The square stitch is one of the most basic stitches to use and it can be built upon to create larger and different lanyards. Learn how to end a square stitch and you'll have a basic idea as to how to end other lanyards.

Step 1

Stitch one more square stitch but don't pull it tight. Keep it loose.

Step 2

Pull one strand and bring it around the side of the square stitch to the left. Pull it up and through the opposite loop, up through the loose middle stitch.

Step 3

Continue this with the strand that is to the left of the first strand you used. Pull it around the square stitch to the left and bring it up through the opposite loop and through the middle stitch.

Step 4

Continue this with the two remaining strands.

Step 5

Pull the strands with one hand through the middle stitch and in the opposite direction of the lanyard. Pull them tight to secure the lanyard, but not so tight that it might break.

Step 6

Cut the remaining strands to a desired length.

Tip

This is the basic way to end a lanyard. Even though ending stitches follow the same general guidelines, there are more specific ways to end lanyards that use more strands.
