A group of metal links in a chain

Chairs are a part of bikes, cars, fences and other objects around a home. While most of these objects have a rustproof coating, over time the coating wears off or gets removed by wear and tear. The moisture in the air then settles on the metal chains and rust forms. If the rust is not removed the chains become coated with it. In time the rust continues to spread, causing rust holes that break the links in the chain. To preserve chains as long as possible, it is necessary to get rid of the rust.

Step 2

Put on rubber gloves. Pour a commercial rust remover onto the steel wool pad. Apply the solvent to the rust on the chains. The acids in rust removers dissolve the rust after 10 to 15 minutes.

Step 3

Wipe the chain clean with paper towels.

Step 4

Apply a primer to the chains with a paintbrush. This primer prevents any further rusting by providing a protective layer against moisture or water.

Step 5

Let the primer dry completely before using the chains.
