Whether you're preparing overhead slides for a presentation, creating a handwriting or printing aide for your youngster or making a transparent overlay for journal-making or scrapbooking, knowing how to use inkjet transparency film can come in handy. The majority of home and office printers can print on transparency film, although you might have to configure your settings before you print. Be sure that whatever image you're printing onto inkjet transparencies is in black and white, and has the contrast turned up high before printing.

Step 1

Open up the document or image that you wish to print. If you're preparing an image for screenprinting or overhead projection, make sure that the contrast on the image is as high as possible while retaining the important details of the image.

Step 2

Select the "File" drop down menu, and click "Print." Use the "Printer" drop down menu to select the appropriate printer you wish to print from.

Step 3

Look for the "Page Setup" or "Options" menu option, and click on it. Select a standard paper size of 8 1/2 by 11 inches, and select "Inkjet Transparency Film" under paper type.

Step 4

Take the stack of transparency paper and fan the pages slightly to make sure they are not stuck together. Align them so that they're all lined up and square with each other.

Step 5

Remove any paper in your printer and load your inkjet transparency film. Determine which side of the transparency is sticky or rough (compared to the smooth opposite side), and face that side print side up or down, depending on whether your printer takes paper as it sits in the tray or inverts it first. The printer should place ink on the rough side. Align your transparencies so that the white tab is facing in and can be grabbed easily by your printer.

Step 6

Select the "Print" option for your document or image, and watch the printer to make sure that only one transparency sheet is grabbed and that it enters the printer smoothly.

Tip

Make sure that the inkjet transparency film is compatible with your printer, as only inkjet printers are capable of printing on inkjet transparency film.

Before you begin, check that your printer is configured properly to communicate with your computer and that all the drivers are updated.

Warning

Be careful with freshly printed transparencies, as they are often wet and can smudge.
