Alter the angel costume to meet your son's preferences and for seasonal weather.

Although biblical descriptions of angels vary greatly, from the scary looking to the beautiful, most people believe that angles look human-like, with the addition of wings and a halo. If your son needs an angle costume for the church play, or just wants to dress up for Halloween, you can make an angel costume with just a few household supplies and a basic white garment.

Making the Base Costume

Step 1

Trace a large t-shirt shaped dress onto a piece of butcher paper. This will be the pattern for the base of the costume. Make the dress long enough to hit your son at about the ankles, and with long or three-quarter length sleeves. If the costume is for a party or summertime wearing you may want to make it shorter or sleeveless.

Step 2

Cut your pattern out of the paper and pin it to the fabric. Cut the fabric.

Step 3

Sew the pattern together to make the basic dress.

Step 4

Attach gold garland or ribbon around the collar, cuff and hem of the costume with a sewing machine, needle and thread, or a hot glue gun and glue. Make a fancier angle by adding a gold sash or belt from gold fabric.

Adding Embellishments

Step 1

Make angel wings from a large piece of cardboard that has been painted white or gold. Keep in mind that you don't want the wings too large or your son might bend them by hitting against people. Attach the wings over your child's arms backpack-style, with two pieces of elastic. Cut four small holes into the cardboard and thread the elastic through, or use duct tape to secure the elastic to the wings.

Step 2

Design a harp shape from cardboard and paint accordingly. You may want to put small holes into the shape so your son can hold it better, or fashion a small handle on the back side of the cardboard shape.

Step 3

Fashion a halo from the headband and pipe cleaner. First, make the round halo-shape from several pipe cleaners, and then attach another pipe cleaner pointing downward. Wrap the pipe cleaner around the headband. Depending upon the length of your pipe cleaners, you might need several for the portion that attaches the main halo to the headband.

Step 4

Place the sandals on your son's feet. If it is cold outside, let him wear socks or white sneakers.

Tip

If you don’t want to sew the basic construction of the costume, you could always embellish a white colored robe or over sized men’s shirt, depending upon the size of your son.

If your son doesn’t want to wear a dress-like costume, embellish a white sweatpants suit instead.

Warning

Don’t place the garland too close to the collar and cuffs of the costume; it can easily irritate your son’s skin.

Don’t overdo the embellishments or it might start to look too girlie, or your little boy might not approve.
