A chariot craft provides a natural tie-in with both studies of ancient history and Sunday School lessons on the Exodus, Elijah and Philip's witness to the Ethiopian man, but teachers of all types generally face a limited materials budget. Rather than break the bank with some nifty kits and expensive materials, you can craft a simple chariot using construction paper, tape and scissors. Children will enjoy acting out the stories and historical scenes with their chariots and you will not feel so exasperated when their attention span expires and they abandon the chariot crafts for the next game.

Step 2

Fold and crease all the flaps onto the center of the crossbar if desired. Stand the sides up and tape the corners to secure. Step 3

Decorate the sides and front with markers, crayons or colored pencils. Tie a piece of yarn or string as a harness around a toy horse figure.

Step 4

Punch a hole with a hole punch in the top front corners and run the ends of the harness through each side. Place a small toy figure in the chariot and wrap the reins around its hands.

Step 5

Use your chariot model to retell historical events and Bible stories.

Tip

Discipleship Publications International also offers a paper chariot template which you can copy on construction paper.

If plastic toy figures are not available, you can make paper people and horses to outfit your chariot.
