For most surfaces, paint application is a breeze. With a few brush strokes, you can revitalize almost any surface. Paint removal, though, is a different story. Depending on the surface and the type of paint, the removal process varies. Fortunately, if you want to strip acrylic paint off a plexiglass surface, the job isn't overly complex. With just a few minutes of work, virtually anybody can get acrylic paint off plexiglass.

Things You'll Need

  • Rubber Gloves

  • Stir Stick

  • Rag

  • White Vinegar

  • Ammonia

  • Spray Bottle

  • Small Bucket

  • Rubber Putty Knife

Step 1

Chip off loose paint with a rubber putty knife. Do not use a plastic or metal putty knife, because these might scratch the plexiglass. Plexiglass surfaces are very slick, and paint has trouble sticking to slick surfaces. Acrylic paint chips off relatively easily.

Step 2

Put on rubber gloves.

Step 3

Combine equal amounts of ammonia and white vinegar in a small bucket. If you are unable to get all the paint off the plexiglass using the rubber putty knife, the ammonia-vinegar mixture can loosen the rest. Chemical paint removers are not recommended, because they can warp plexiglass.

Step 4

Mix the ammonia and white vinegar for about 60 seconds, using a stir stick.

Step 5

Pour the ammonia and white vinegar solution into a spray bottle.

Step 6

Spritz the plexiglass with the ammonia-vinegar solution. Let it sit on the painted surface for five minutes.

Step 7

Wipe off the paint, along with the ammonia and vinegar, using a dry rag. Spray and wipe again if necessary.
