  • Resealable plastic bag

A socket wrench is useful for removing shutters in preparation for storage.

Homeowners in coastal areas know that when late summer turns to fall it's time to get ready for hurricane season and literally "batten down the hatches." Properly installed and secured hurricane shutters can save precious belongings indoors from water and wind damages, as well as protect against broken, flying window glass. At season's end, many people want to remove and store their hurricane shutters. Storage is an important consideration, especially for wooden shutters, which can warp and weaken if not stored properly.

Step 1

Unscrew and remove the bolts that secure the hurricane shutters around the window frames using the socket wrench. Place all hardware in resealable plastic bags to prevent the parts from rusting or getting lost.

Step 2

Remove the shutters from the building, lifting each shutter out of its mounting track on the exterior wall.

Step 3

Store wooden or aluminum shutters flat in a dry area of the basement or a storage shed where water cannot reach them. Aluminum shutters may also be stored vertically, but always store wooden shutters horizontally to prevent warping.

Step 4

Cover with a tarp to keep shutters clean and free of dust.
