Put the finishing touch on a cat costume by adding a tail.

Whether you're gearing up for Halloween or preparing for an upcoming costume party, finding the right costume should be at the top of your list. A few favorites--such as a cat or rabbit costume--may require a little extra work, however. The trick to pulling off these costumes is including a tail, but the project isn't as difficult as it may sound. Party-goers have a number of options when it comes to attaching the tail, from simple safety pins to good, old-fashioned sewing.

Safety Pins

Step 1

Try on your costume. Use a pencil or a piece of tape to mark where you want the tail to be attached and then take off the costume.

Step 2

Insert a safety pin through the tail and then attach it to the costume at the place you marked with the tape.

Step 3

Use extra safety pins to secure the tail to the costume. Make sure that all the pins are securely closed so that you won't be poked while wearing the costume.

Step 2

Insert the thread through the eye of the needle and tie the thread in a knot. This will keep the thread from slipping when you begin to sew.

Step 3

Position the tail at the spot that you marked on the costume. Insert the needle through the tail, into the costume and then back into the tail. Continue in this method until the tail is securely attached.

Step 4

Tie a knot in the thread to keep the stitching from unraveling. Use a pair of scissors to cut off any excess thread.

Warning

Be careful not to stick yourself with the needle if you choose to hand sew the tail to the costume.
