Use glue to attach carpet to steel.

In a contemporary home, steel can look sleek and sophisticated. But sometimes a steel surface can use just a little carpet. Steel steps, for example, can be slippery, almost inviting a fall. It can feel much too cold when your bare feet hit in in the morning. And steel poles in basements or under decks can be hazardous if you have small children. With proper preparation, gluing carpet to the steel is a quick task.

Step 1

Measure the area where you plan to install the carpet, and cut it to the appropriate size. Use a carpet cutter with a sharp blade for best results. Cut on a concrete surface or other area that can be scratched in case the blade goes too deep.

Step 2

Clean the steel with a soap and water solution to remove any dirt, grease or dust that would interfere with glue adhesion. Dust off the back of the carpet to remove any small threads left from cutting.

Step 3

Use a trowel to apply a layer of carpet glue to the steel. Spread it over the area evenly, ensuring that the entire area where the carpet will go is covered.

Step 4

Press the carpet into place in the area of steel covered with adhesive. Run a push broom over the carpet to ensure firm contact with the glue. If you're padding a pole, tie rope around it in several places to keep the carpet stays in place while the glue sets up.

Step 5

Allow adequate setting and drying time for the carpet glue, based on the instructions for the specific type you purchased.

Step 6

Remove any loose fibers from the carpet, and vacuum if necessary.

Tip

If you want padding under the carpet, install this first by gluing it to the steel and allowing adequate drying time. Install the carpet by applying the glue over the padding. Open windows for ventilation, as carpet glue has a strong smell.
