You can make handmade pom-poms for your cheerleading squad.

If you are organizing a cheerleading squad, then you know how expensive cheerleading equipment and gear can be. For example, you could end up spending a great deal of money just on the pom-pom shakers the cheerleaders need for their cheers. However, you can make your own pom-pom shakers using inexpensive materials from most craft supply stores. This can also allow you to choose the specific colors that you need for your cheerleading squad.

Step 1

Cut ribbon streamers to measure 24 inches long. Use as many or as few streamers as you want. Using fewer streamers will cause the resulting pom-pom shaker to feel thin, while shakers with a lot of streamers will make a thick pom-pom.

Step 2

Place all the streamers in a stack, and grasp the stack in the middle. If the alignment of the individual streamers are off by an inch or two, that is fine.

Step 3

Knot the middle of the streamers tightly onto an elastic hair tie.

Step 4

Wrap the hair tie tightly around a wooden dowel that's 4 inches long.

Step 5

Wrap the wooden dowel and the loop of the streamers using colorful duct tape. This will be the handle of the pom-pom shaker. You can use any color duct tape you prefer, which will make the handle look more finished.
