Fumes from various objects will turn your home into a stinky mess.

Daily life can fill your home with unpleasant fumes. Cleaning chemicals, cooking, paint and even new furniture will all leave lingering odors in the air that can last for days. These fumes can attach themselves to various surfaces — such as carpeting, walls and upholstery — and rear their smelly head whenever the surface is disturbed. Fortunately, several methods will help eliminate the fumes from your home using inexpensive and common items.

Step 1

Allow fresh air to flow through your home by opening doors and windows on a warm day. Leave the doors and windows open for several hours to remove the fumes from your home. Turn on fans to help push the fumes out of your home.

Step 2

Remove fumes attached from walls by washing the walls with a sponge dampened in white vinegar. Let the vinegar dry on the walls. As the vinegar dries, it will remove the fumes as well as other odors from the walls. Mist upholstery with white vinegar and let dry to remove fumes and odors from the fibers.

Step 3

Remove trapped fumes and odors from carpeting by sprinkling a layer of baking soda over carpets. Let the baking soda sit for several hours. Use your vacuum to remove the baking soda. Repeat the process as needed.

Step 4

Fill a pot with water and add several cut lemon wedges. Bring the water to a boil and lower the heat. Allow the water to simmer dry. The lemon will help remove fumes and odors from the air.

Step 5

Cut several onions in half and sit on plates. Place the onion-filled plates around your home and leave overnight. The onions will remove fumes and odors from your home's air. Alternatively, fill small bowls with water and add 1 tbsp. of clear ammonia. Place the bowls around your home and let sit overnight to remove the fumes.
