Beautiful wood is a treasure.

Velcro, or hook and loop tape, comes in a variety of forms for many different applications. You can attach Velcro to virtually anything. The varied forms the tape comes in can help you determine how you want to attach it. If you want to attach Velcro to wood specifically, you have many options. Part of your decision-making process will involve the object the Velcro is being attached to. If you are putting the tape on a treasured piece of furniture, you will not want to make any holes, nor will you want to use an adhesive.

Step 1

Velcro tape can be added to wood in invisible areas.

Staple plain Velcro to a piece of wood that will not show in the final design. You can use a staple gun with small to medium sized staples, unless you need a heavy application. If you need a stronger application, use heavy duty staples. Using a wood backing for an art mount, you can staple the tape directly to the wood and then cover with the art work.

Step 2

Antique wood can be marred by the use of adhesives or staples.

Adhesive Velcro may be applied directly to hidden areas of your wood if the application will not show. If the purpose of the tape is to hold an object permanently, adhesive will work. If your wood is extremely dense and has little tooth, you may need to use a little acetone to remove some of the smoothness. Using an old rag, rub the acetone on the wood finish until the coating is removed. If your Velcro adhesive is not strong enough, it may peel off. Heavy duty adhesives, purchased separately, can be helpful for some applications.

Step 3

Attach Velcro to a piece of antique furniture or fine furniture using creativity. To hold a ruffled cushion on a cedar chest, for example, lay two strips of the loop side over the cedar chest top with the loops facing the finished wood. Measure out the length of strips needed to turn under several inches on front and back of lid. Cut to length. Bring the strips around to the underside of the lid. Using strips of hook sided tape, attach the ends of the loop tape so that you have two straps firmly held to the lid and the soft side of the hook and loop tape facing the lid, protecting it from damage. Remove the hook and loop tape. Place on a protected surface and use tape adhesive or glue to adhere the hook side of tape back to the back of the loop side. Make this hook tape the length of the width of the cushion from front to back. Place the loop tape on the bottom of the ruffled pillow and stitch or use tape adhesive to attach the loop tapes in the locations of your straps. Place the pillow on the cedar chest with the strap tapes affixed to the pillow tapes. fasten the straps on the inside of the lid and your project is complete. The wood is undamaged, and your cushion will remain in place to protect the cedar chest.
