Filet crochet is a crochet technique that involves a combination of stitches to create a patterned mesh fabric, well suited for lace decor, such as doilies. You can create your own pattern using this technique to make a variety of lacy items. Using graph paper and your knowledge of filet crochet stitches, you can make a custom pattern for one-of-a-kind gifts or for selling items to make extra income.

Step 1

Plan the size of your finished filet crochet object and draw the perimeter measurements on the graph paper. For example, if you want a 5-inch by 5-inch finished piece, draw the same dimensions along the lines of the graph paper.

Step 2

Decide what design you want to incorporate into the mesh pattern and draw a rough outline within the perimeter you drew. For example, if you want a heart that takes up most of the square, draw the rough outline so that the heart does not touch the perimeter of the finished piece.

Step 3

Color in the squares of the graph paper that will be filled to make the shape. In keeping with the heart example, for a hollow heart shape, fill in the squares along the rough-drawn heart shape. For a thicker line, fill in two or three squares along the outside of the shape.

Step 4

Choose the stitches you want to use for your mesh pattern. The standard stitch combination used for filet mesh is double crochets for the edge of the square, followed by two chain stitches and another double crochet to form the open square.

Step 5

Calculate the number of stitches for each row. A square on the graph paper represents three stitches and one row. For example, if your 5-by-5-inch square has 25 squares to fill the length and height, your finished piece will have 25 rows with 75 stitches per row.

Step 6

Write out the written version of your pattern. Open mesh stitches will be one double crochet and chaining two stitches, and filled stitches will be three double crochets.

Step 7

Work a practice swatch of your pattern to make sure the written stitches match the drawing. Note any changes you have to make in order to make the pattern work and edit your pattern, as necessary.

Tip

Take meticulous notes to make sure your pattern is as accurate as possible. Track the yardage amount of the crochet thread you use for your piece so you can note it in your pattern's materials list.

Warning

Pattern writing involves trial and error. Expect revisions and adjustments with your first few patterns.
