  • Fabric

  • Needle and thread

A turban that is easy to put on is a must for costuming.

Turbans are a major part of many Middle Eastern cultures. They are a testament of faith, projecting royalty and grace. Traditional turbans are wrapped on the head--a process that can be very time consuming. If you need a fake turban for a costume or for play, it is much more practical to make one on a hat base so that it can be easily taken on and off.

Step 2

Size the cap to fit your head, then transfer it to a matching Styrofoam head form.

Step 3

Drape a piece of fabric that matches the turban over the cap and sew it in place. Trim off any excess around the edges.

Step 4

Cut a long piece of fabric in the color of your choice. It should be 24 inches wide and at least 10 feet long.

Step 5

Fold the fabric lengthwise three times, resulting in a band of fabric that is 3 inches wide. This will provide additional thickness to give the turban authenticity.

Step 6

Position the band at the back of the cap and sew it in place.

Step 7

Note the diagonal direction of the wrapping.

Wrap the fabric around the hat several times, covering all but the top (which is already the proper color). The wraps should be slightly diagonal, overlapping on the right and left sides, creating a peak at the center of the forehead. They should extend past the edge of the cap, covering the ears slightly.

Frequently sew the fabric in place with a few loop stitches as you wrap, ensuring that it will not move.

Step 8

Remove the fake turban from the Styrofoam head. You can now put it on like a hat without having to retie it.
