Dream catchers were created by Native Americans.

The legend of a dream catcher catching bad dreams derives from the Ojibwe Native American Indian Tribe. The dream catcher is woven to catch bad dreams in the web and allow good dreams to pass through the center. Beads, feathers and different colored catgut string is used to make the spider type weave. Single and double ring dream catchers are woven in the same manner. The difficulty level rises with the addition of the second ring.

Step 1

Measure and cut two lengths of suede lacing 9 feet long.

Step 2

Wrap each ring with a length of suede lacing. Place 2 inches of one end of the lacing along the ring. Hold the lacing in place. Wrap the long end of the lacing around the ring and over the top of the 2-inch end. This holds the lacing in place without tying a knot. Position each wrap side by side. Wrap until the entire ring is covered. Tape the end of the lacing to hold it in place. This will be used to make a "God's eye."

Step 3

Hold one ring so the taped end of the suede lacing is on the top of the ring. Hold the second ring so the taped end of suede lacing is on the bottom of the ring. Insert one ring through the other. Position the two rings so they are perpendicular to each other.

Step 4

Remove the tape on the suede lacing that is on top. Hold the lacing firmly so it does not slip. Wrap the suede lacing in a diagonal across the two rings. Wrap it again in an opposite diagonal to create an X on the top ring.

Step 5

Wrap the long end of the suede lacing from the back of the nearest ring clockwise to the next ring. Keep the lacing under the next ring. Wrap the lacing around the ring. The wrap will follow the X made in the center to hold the two rings together. Repeat the process until the God's eye is approximately 1 inch wide. This will take approximately eight complete rounds of wrapping from the back of the ring to the front. A ridge is formed along each ring that is easily viewed.

Step 6

Stop wrapping the God's eye when a 6-inch end is left on the lacing. Place your finger under the next hoop that is not wrapped. Wrap the lacing around your finger and the hoop. Remove your finger. Place the end of the lacing through the loop on the inside of the hoop. Pull the end of the lacing tight. Cut off the excess.

Step 7

Repeat on the opposite side of the two hoops.

Step 8

Measure and cut a piece of catgut 12 feet long. Tie the catgut to one of the hoops next to the edge of the God's eye. Leave a 4-inch end on the knot. Squeeze a small drop of glue on the knot. Tie a second knot and pull tightly. Cut the excess catgut from the knot.

Step 9

Hold the God's eye that has the knot tied next to it in your left hand. Position the dream catcher so the hoop with the knot is on top.

Step 10

Pull the long end of the catgut along the front of the hoop. Place the catgut on the suede-covered hoop approximately 1 1/2-inches from the knot. Pull the catgut tight and hold in place. Drape the catgut over the back of the hoop. Insert the end of the catgut through the catgut loop to the left side of your thumb. Pull the entire length of the catgut through the loop. Pull the catgut tight. This creates a type of knot that holds the spiderlike weave in place. Repeat the process along the edge of the hoop until you reach the second God's eye.

Step 11

Hold the last catgut knot. Flip the dream catcher so the second God's eye is pointing to the left. Turn the dream catcher so the loop with the catgut knot is pointing toward you. Extend the catgut from the first hoop to the hoop on the top of the dream catcher. Hold the catgut in place. Insert the end of the catgut through the catgut loop to the left side of your thumb. Pull the entire length of the catgut through the loop. Pull the catgut tight. Repeat this step until all four sides of the hoops have one layer of catgut spiderlike knots.

Step 12

Hold the last catgut knot. Flip the dream catcher so the God's eye to the right is on the left. Insert the long end of the catgut through the back of the loop on the first spiderlike knot on the hoop edge. Insert the long end of the catgut through the newly made loop so the end of the catgut is behind the loop. Make a small loop around the center of the spiderlike knot. Pull the catgut tight, making sure to position the loop in the center of the spiderlike knot. Hold the knot in place.

Step 13

Insert the end of the catgut from the back of the next spiderlike knot. Insert the long end of the catgut through the newly made loop, so the end of the catgut is behind the loop. Pull the loop tight, making sure it is positioned in the center of the previously made spiderlike knot. Repeat the knotting process until the entire dream catcher web is created. The spiderlike knot openings will get smaller as they reach the center of the dream catcher.

Step 14

Tie the catgut in a double knot at the center of the weave. Squeeze a drop of glue on the knot. Cut off the excess catgut.

Tip

Cut strips of lacing 18 to 24 inches long. Fold the lacing in half. Loop the lacing along the bottom edge of the dream catcher. Add pony beads and feathers.
