Crochet hanger covers to decorate your unsightly hangers.

Crochet hanger covers provide a cushion of yarn between the hanger and your clothes. This serves a a protection for your clothing, keeping them safe from snags and holes that the hanger alone might cause. The texture of the hanger covers also provides friction to ensure that the clothing will not slip off the hanger. Crocheted hanger covers also provide decoration to hangers that otherwise might seem unsightly when hanging alone in your closet.

Step 1

Tie a slip knot in the end of a 2-ounce skein of yarn. Slip a size G crochet hook through the loop and tight it around the hook. Create 61 chain stitches and then turn the chain. This is row one.

Step 2

Skip over the first chain space. Create a single crochet stitch in the next chain space by sticking the hook through the chain space and hooking the length of yarn. Pull the hooked yarn back through the chain space. There should now be two loops on your hook. Hook the length of yarn once more and pull it through the two loops on the hook. There should now be only one loop on the hook. Create a single crochet stitch in this same manner in each of the next 28 chain spaces. Skip the next chain space to create a hole for the hanger's hook, and then make a single crochet stitch in each of the next 30 chain spaces. Do not turn your work.

Step 3

Make a single crochet stitch in the back loop of the first chain stitch of row one. Continue to single crochet in the back loop of each of the remaining 59 chain spaces from row one. Do not turn your work.

Step 4

Form a single crochet stitch in each of the first 29 single crochet spaces from the previous row. Make a single crochet stitch in the chain space of the hole. Continue to make single crochet stitches in each of the remaining 30 single crochet spaces from the previous row. Do not turn your work.

Step 5

Make a single crochet stitch in each of the single crochet spaces from the previous row to the very end. Do not turn your work. Repeat this pattern for 10 to 12 rows or until the width of your work will fit around the sides of a wooden hanger. Do not turn your work after each row.

Step 6

Clip the yarn to leave a 4-inch tail and weave the tail back and forth through the previous stitches. Wrap the hanger cover around the wooden part of the hanger, positioning the cover so the wire hook of the hanger matches up with the hole in the first rows. Thread some yarn through a needle and sew the two edges of the hanger cover together to secure it around the hanger.

Tip

If desired, crochet a row of shells along the bottom of the hanger cover by making five double crochet stitches in every fifth crochet space.
