Make a scarecrow head for your scarecrow's body.

You may make a scarecrow to frighten the birds from your garden, or you can make a scarecrow to sit on your porch as a scary Halloween decoration. A scarecrow is meant to look like a human, so take the time to craft a head for your scarecrow. A head gives the scarecrow a significantly more human look, and it can be made easily from objects you have around the house.

Step 1

Lay an old pillowcase out on the table so that the open end is closest to you. The open end is the scarecrow head's chin, while the other short, closed end is the top of its head.

Step 2

Paint a face on the pillowcase with acrylic paint and a paintbrush. You can make the face as detailed or as simple as you like. At the most simple level, make two dots for the eyes and a curve for the mouth. Allow the paint to dry completely.

Step 3

Fill the pillowcase with stuffing. You may use old clothes, fiberfill or straw for this purpose.

Step 4

Gather the open end of the pillowcase in your hand, holding it closed.

Step 5

Push the open end of the filled pillowcase onto the neck of your scarecrow.

Step 6

Tie a length of twine around the neck of the scarecrow, both securing the head to the neck and closing the open end of the pillowcase.

Step 7

Set a large straw hat securely on top of the scarecrow's head.

Tip

You may use a large paper bag instead of a pillowcase, but the paper bag will not last as long as cloth.
