Things You'll Need

  • Bathtub cleaner

  • Hand orbital sander

  • 40-grit sandpaper

  • 150-grit sandpaper

  • Towel

  • Shampoo

Use sandpaper to smooth textured surfaces.

Suction cups can secure shelving, shower caddies and hooks to showers and tubs for better organization and storage of toiletries. Tubs with textured surfaces pose a problem for these handy accessories because the suction cups cannot form a strong seal and stick. However, the cups can stick with simple preparation of the textured surface.

Step 1

Clean the textured space where the suction cups will be applied with a bathtub cleaner.

Step 2

Sand down the area using a hand orbital sander equipped with 40-grit sandpaper. This coarse grit provides heavy sanding that will strip and flatten the textured surface.

Step 3

Sand down the same area using 150-grit sandpaper. This fine grit smooths the area, allowing for an even surface where the suction cups can stick.

Step 4

Rinse the sanded surface and wipe dry with a towel.

Step 5

Apply shampoo directly to the suction cups and press the cups firmly to the newly sanded surface. Hold the cups to the surface for about one minute for a secure set.
