How to Dye Flannel

  • 16 oz. of fabric dye

When you are making a craft project using flannel fabric, you may try to save money by using discounted or scrap flannel that is not necessarily the color you prefer. One way to use cheap flannel fabric, while not sacrificing your color choice, is to dye the flannel to match your color preference. You can dye flannel fabric using a few basic materials that can be purchased at any arts and crafts or fabric supply store.

Step 1

Fill a stock pot with 2 gallons of water. Heat the water over high heat until the water boils, then reduce the heat to medium low.

Pour 16 oz. of liquid fabric dye into the stock pot. Select any color of fabric dye that you prefer.

Add 1 cup of salt into the stock pot. Stir the mixture for two minutes using a long-handled spoon.

Step 4

Submerge up to 3 lbs. of dry flannel fabric into the dye bath. Push the flannel under the solution using the long-handled spoon.

Step 5

Simmer the flannel fabric in the dye solution for 30 minutes. If the fabric is not as dark or colorful as you refer, simmer the fabric for an additional 10 minutes.

Step 6

Rinse out the flannel fabric under cold, clear water for 10 minutes, then dry the fabric in a standard dryer on low heat.
